Exploring the Galapagos by Land A Bucket List Adventure

Lisa Grossman April 6, 2025

The Galapagos Islands are often considered a dream destination, and for good reasons. This unique archipelago, teeming with diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes, is a place that truly feels like a step into another world. For many travelers, the traditional method of exploring the Galapagos is via a 5- to 7-day boat excursion, but I decided to take a different route, one that allowed me to experience the islands from the comfort and flexibility of land-based accommodations.

Getting to the Galapagos: The Journey Begins

Before diving into the magic of the islands, it's worth noting that getting to the Galapagos is a journey in itself. It takes a few planes, boats, taxis, and buses to reach the islands, so prepare for a full day of travel in each direction. Most travelers need to overnight in either Guayaquil or Quito, and while Quito is often the most convenient, I chose to stop in Guayaquil. This allowed me the chance to explore a little more of Ecuador's highlands or simply relax before the next leg of the trip.

A Layover in Guayaquil: Hotel del Parque

We decided to make our layover in Guayaquil, and I highly recommend the Hotel del Parque for a restful stopover. Located just 15 minutes from the airport, this hotel offered a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of travel. The property was impeccably maintained, spacious, and well-appointed. The cherry on top was the Casa Julia, an on-site restaurant that served some of the best meals we had during our time in Ecuador. If you're looking for a comfortable, top-notch place to stay during your layover, Hotel del Parque should be at the top of your list.

Arriving in the Galapagos: Finch Bay Hotel

After our layover, we made our way to the Galapagos Islands, where we stayed at the Finch Bay Hotel—without a doubt, the best property on the islands. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the professionalism and warmth of the staff. The service was impeccable, and they made us feel like we were part of their family. The hotel itself was located just a short boat ride from downtown Puerto Ayora, the main town on Santa Cruz Island, which meant we had easy access to local shops, restaurants, and the vibrant island atmosphere.

The Finch Bay Hotel is a great spot for those looking for a combination of relaxation and adventure. The island’s diverse ecosystem is just a stone's throw away, and the staff was happy to help us arrange a variety of day excursions—both on land and at sea.

Exploring the Islands: Land and Sea Adventures

During our six-night stay, we took full advantage of the hotel's excursion offerings. We spent days out on the water, snorkeling with sea lions, watching dolphins frolic beside our boat, and hiking across volcanic islands. One of the highlights was a boat tour to Bartholomew Island, an uninhabited volcanic island known for its dramatic scenery. It was a picture-perfect experience that included spectacular snorkeling and a couple of beautiful hikes that gave us incredible views of the islands.

Back on land, we enjoyed a number of tours and activities close to the hotel. A hike to Las Grietas, a unique geological formation, was a must. The walk began just half a mile from Finch Bay, and the crystal-clear water and towering cliffs were a sight to behold. Another must-visit spot was the Charles Darwin Research Station. This educational walking tour allowed us to learn about the region's flora and fauna, as well as the ongoing conservation efforts that have made the Galapagos such a vital part of ecological research.

We also had the opportunity to take a guided walking tour of the Highlands on Santa Cruz Island. This 4-hour tour took us to the island’s highest elevations, where we visited giant sinkholes, explored a lava tunnel, and even spent time at a tortoise sanctuary. Seeing the iconic Galapagos tortoises up close was an unforgettable experience.

A Family Trip: Perfect for Kids (and Adults!)

We visited the Galapagos with our son when he was 16, and while the trip was incredible, in hindsight, the islands might be even more enjoyable for families with children between the ages of 8 and 12. The wildlife and natural beauty are endlessly fascinating for younger kids, and the combination of easy hikes, boat tours, and hands-on wildlife experiences are perfect for engaging them in a way that’s both educational and fun.

Final Thoughts: A Bucket List Experience

The Galapagos Islands are undoubtedly a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Whether you choose to explore by land or by sea, the islands offer a wealth of experiences that are unlike anywhere else on Earth. The Finch Bay Hotel was the perfect base for our exploration, combining comfort with easy access to the island’s wonders.

If you're planning a trip, be prepared for a journey that requires patience and a bit of extra time for travel logistics. However, once you arrive, the islands reward you with some of the most incredible nature experiences imaginable. From snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to hiking through volcanic landscapes and encountering wildlife that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before, the Galapagos is truly a place that will stay with you long after you leave.

Have you ever considered visiting the Galapagos? What would be your dream activity on the islands?

Discovering Cartagena A Perfect and Easy Getaway

Lisa Grossman April 6, 2025

If you haven’t had the chance to visit Cartagena yet, now is the time! Located just a 4 ½ hour nonstop flight from New York, this beautiful Colombian city offers the perfect mix of history, culture, and beachside relaxation. Once you land, it's a quick taxi ride to the heart of the action—the Centro, the old Colonial walled city of Cartagena.

Where to Stay: The Santa Clara Sofitel Legend

I stayed at the luxurious Santa Clara Sofitel Legend, a beautiful hotel that’s not only a historical gem but also ideally situated. It's within walking distance of dozens of fantastic restaurants, quirky shops, spas, coffee spots, and vibrant bars. What really struck me about the city was how well-preserved the old city is, with hardly any garbage on the streets. The colonial-style properties are lovingly maintained and refurbished, blending charm and modernity.  I felt completely safe wandering around, even at night, as the streets are lively, with plenty of locals and visitors out enjoying the city. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there’s always something to see, making it perfect for a stroll.

Exploring Cartagena: A Guided Tour Through Time

On my first day, I arranged a four-hour guided city tour through the hotel. The guide was fantastic, and the experience gave me a deeper understanding of the city’s rich history. One of the highlights was visiting the 16th-century Spanish Fort, a historic landmark that has successfully defended Cartagena from various invaders over the centuries.  We also explored the artsy neighborhoods of Getsemani, known for its vibrant street art and bohemian vibe. The tour was well worth the time and cost, offering a fascinating look at Cartagena’s past and present.

Rosario Islands: A Day on the Water

The following day, we chartered a 30-foot boat for a trip to the Rosario Islands, located about an hour away by boat. The ride itself was scenic and filled with stops to see historical sites and enjoy a bit of snorkeling. The Rosario Islands are a paradise, with multiple beach clubs offering toes-in-the-sand dining and full-service beach experiences. It was the perfect, laid-back day with plenty of relaxation and good food.

 The Sofitel Legend Experience

As for the Sofitel Legend, it lives up to its reputation as one of Cartagena’s premier properties. The service is exceptional, with a team of butlers who are not only incredibly attentive but also knowledgeable about the city. Our room was spacious, though not newly renovated, and the charm of the hotel’s older style gave it a sense of character and history. Even though it may not have the sleek, modern vibe of newer hotels, I would still recommend staying here for the superb service and unbeatable location.

If you're looking for something a bit more intimate, Casa San Agustin is another excellent option. It’s a smaller, boutique property that might appeal more to couples or solo travelers. However, if you're traveling with children, I’d still recommend the Sofitel Legend for its larger space and family-friendly amenities.

   Final Thoughts: Cartagena Is Waiting

Cartagena is a city that blends history, culture, and beach relaxation seamlessly. Whether you’re exploring the colonial walled city, lounging on an island, or enjoying exquisite local cuisine, there's something for everyone. With the great weather, friendly locals, and vibrant energy, I left feeling refreshed and enriched by the experience. Trust me, if you haven't yet visited, now's the time to go!

Discovering the Allure of the Ligurian Coast

Discovering the Allure of the Ligurian Coast A Memorable Journey through Forte dei Marmi, Santa Margherita, and Portofino

Forte dei Marmi: A Shopper's Paradise

Forte dei Marmi is known for its beautiful beaches and high-end shopping, making it an ideal stop for those who love to indulge. Despite the overcast skies, we reveled in the town’s cozy atmosphere, strolling past boutiques featuring all the major European designer brands. While we couldn’t enjoy the sun-soaked beach, window shopping and soaking in the town’s charm was a delightful experience.

Hotel Principe Forte dei Marmi, and I can confidently say we have zero regrets about our choice. This boutique hotel, with its only 28 rooms, offered an intimate and luxurious experience. The hotel features lush gardens and a Michelin-starred restaurant that tantalized our taste buds each evening. Breakfast was a cozy affair on the main floor, setting the tone for our days ahead.

The small gym served its purpose for a quick workout, but it was the five-star spa that we truly adored. After long day of exploration, we indulged in the spa’s steam and dry saunas, hot and cold pools, and other amenities. My friends, who joined us, took advantage of various spa treatments and raved about the quality of the services. One of the standout features of our stay was the exceptional service. Lorenzo, our concierge, went above and beyond to arrange a myriad of activities and dining experiences for us. Whether we changed our minds or had a last-minute idea, he was always accommodating and full of helpful suggestions. Our rooms were spacious and filled with natural light, adorned with luxurious bedding, plush towels, and cozy bathrobes, making it a perfect retreat after our daily adventures.

Santa Margherita: A Taste of Italian Tradition

Next, we traveled to Santa Margherita, where we checked into the Grand Hotel Miramare. This stunning cliffside hotel overlooks the breathtaking Ligurian Sea, blending traditional Italian elegance with modern comforts. Our room, large and beautifully appointed, offered a lovely view of the hotel’s garden, ensuring that even without a sea view, we felt surrounded by beauty. The Grand Hotel Miramare exudes classic Italian charm, with its spacious rooms and rich decor. After a long day of exploring, we appreciated the large bathroom and rejuvenating showers that felt divine. Though we didn’t utilize the concierge extensively, the staff was always ready to assist, offering recommendations for local restaurants and shops. One evening, we dined at a charming family-run pizzeria in Santa Margherita. The bustling atmosphere, combined with the delicious smells wafting from the kitchen, made for an unforgettable meal. The friendly service and authentic flavors reminded us of why we love Italy—the food and warmth of its people truly embody the spirit of the country.

Portofino Adventure: Culinary Delights in a Stunning Setting

Our journey culminated in the picturesque fishing village of Portofino, where we embarked on an adventure at La Portofinese. This experience was unlike any other—an educational, one-table dining experience perched high atop the hills, surrounded by vineyards and stunning views of the Ligurian Sea.

After meeting our guide at the charming, cobbled square of Portofino, we climbed into a tiny green vehicle for a thrilling ride up Monte di Portofino. The winding roads provided breathtaking views, but I recommend sitting on the left side of the car if you're fearful of heights—the steep drops are indeed dramatic!

Upon reaching our destination, we were greeted by a knowledgeable host who led us through a vibrant farm, where we picked plump grape tomatoes and marveled at the beauty surrounding us. The open-air pergola where we would dine was adorned with flowers and vines, offering a breathtaking backdrop for our culinary adventure. Our chef, Paola, guided us as we made our own pasta, shaping it into corzetti, and prepared Liguria’s famous basil pesto. The aroma of fresh basil and garlic wafted through the air, tantalizing our senses. Following our cooking session, we toured the olive oil production center, honey-making kitchen, and the brewery and winery. As we returned to the dining area, the table was beautifully set, showcasing a feast of bruschettas topped with homemade pesto, traditional tomato, and goat cheese with honey. Each bite was a celebration of local flavors, but the highlight was undoubtedly our freshly made pasta, dressed in the vibrant pesto we had crafted ourselves. We savored every moment, concluding with a delightful honey vanilla ice cream dessert that was the perfect ending to our unforgettable day.

Memories to Cherish

Reflecting on our journey along the Ligurian Coast, we are filled with gratitude for the experiences, the breathtaking landscapes, and the culinary delights we encountered. Despite the less-than-perfect weather, the warmth of the towns and their people, along with the luxurious comforts of our accommodations, made our trip truly special.

If you’re considering a visit to Italy, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring the Ligurian Coast. With its stunning scenery, rich culture, and incredible food, it’s a destination that promises unforgettable memories and experiences to last a lifetime.
